Cristina Santoyo (Junior), becomes the 2018 California USA High School Folkstyle Wrestling Champion. She won her finals match with a Pin Fall in 58 seconds against Lillian McCoy of Casa Grande Wrestling Club. Cristina Santoyo finished her Junior year with a 22 - 4 record. She is currently ranked 2nd in the State of California.

James Monroe High School also had other Wrestlers finishing strong at the end of the California Folkstyle season.

This past Friday and Saturday, 216 teams from California met in Visalia for the 2017-2018 CIF Girls Wrestling Championships. Our 3 Lady Vikings, Yuridia Garcia, Angela Buenrrostro, and Cristina Santoyo, helped Monroe place 22nd as a team. 22 out of 216!!!!

Cristina Santoyo made it to the finals and is Monroe's FIRST ever State Placer. She finished 2nd in California!!
AGAIN, SHE TOOK 2ND IN THE BIGGEST GIRLS WRESTLING TOURNAMENT IN THE UNITED STATES!!!

Yesenia Ayala graduated from Monroe's Law and Government Magnet in 2014 and went to Grinnell College. She has been blazing trails for first generation students of color ever since then. She is an amazing young woman and we can't wait to see what is in store for her as she graduates from Grinnell this May.

Law and Government Magnet seniors Angel De Pacina and Moises Saucedo have each earned P.O.S.S.E. scholarships this year. Angel will attend Middlebury College in Vermont, and Moises will attend Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. P.O.S.S.E. scholarships include full tuition, which can average over $50,000 per year. In addition, these colleges provide qualifying students financial aid to help cover the cost of housing. The academic and social support P.O.S.S.E. offers students as they prepare for college is invaluable, and P.O.S.S.E. also provides on-campus professionals committed to helping students make the most of their college education. With the selection of Angel and Moises, the Magnet now boasts 22 students who have received this prestigious scholarship. Congratulations!

Every year thousands of student musicians audition for the privilege of marching in LAUSD's All-City Marching Band. Only the most qualified musicians are selected and are given the opportunity to represent the District in the world famous Rose Parade. This year, Monroe had 9 students selected for this prestigious event and one of our very own, Larry Coronel, was selected to lead the All-City Marching Band as a Drum Major. Congratulations go out to these accomplished musicians: Alfredo Silva, Henry Ramirez, Alexandro Garcia, Jose Rodriguez, Areli Tinidad, Emily Cartaneja, Jennifer Castro, Ashley Barragan, and Larry Coronel.

The Questbridge National College Match offers one of the most selective scholarships in the country. It includes full tuition, room and board, books, and travel expenses. This year only 767 seniors across the nation were awarded this scholarship, valued at $260,000.Our very own Hipolito Vazquez is one of these seniors. He received a Questbridge Scholarship to the #1 ranked Liberal Arts college in the country, Williams College, in Massachusetts. A great big Viking congratulations, Hipolito!!
